Our Process
At Mockingbird Heirloom Co., every piece begins with a careful eye and a quiet moment of possibility.
Our process is rooted in patience, intention, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the past. We believe that the most meaningful pieces are not mass-produced—they are thoughtfully gathered, lovingly reimagined, and made to last.
The Hunt
The journey begins in antique stores, thrift shops, and tucked-away corners where vintage pieces wait to be rediscovered. We search for plates and treasures with delicate patterns, graceful curves, and timeless character—pieces that may be mismatched or overlooked, yet still hold undeniable beauty.
Only select items make their way home with us. Each plate is chosen not just for how it looks, but for what it could become.
Curating with Intention
Once collected, plates are carefully paired and curated. Colors, patterns, and proportions are thoughtfully considered to ensure harmony and balance. This step is slow and deliberate—no two pieces are rushed, and no combinations are forced.
This is where the story begins to take shape.
Thoughtful Craftsmanship
Each plate is carefully drilled by hand to accommodate the support system that holds your piece together. Drilling vintage china is a delicate process that requires patience and precision to preserve the integrity of the material.
The center hole is intentionally left untreated, meaning it is not sealed, glazed, or altered after drilling. This allows the plate to maintain its original character and structure while ensuring proper fit and stability.
Because the hole is untreated, you may notice:
A slightly rough or matte edge inside the drilled opening
Minor variations in the finish from piece to piece
Dust or particles from support rods scraping inside the hole as you assemble and take apart your tray
These details are a natural result of working with authentic vintage materials and are part of the handcrafted process. While the drilled opening is secure and functional, it should not be exposed to prolonged moisture or soaking.
A Second Song
What once sat forgotten on a shelf is now ready to gather around again—holding jewelry, serving sweets, or becoming part of a meaningful moment in your home. Every finished piece carries its past with grace while stepping into a new purpose.
Why We Do It
Inspired by the Northern Mockingbird—Tennessee’s state bird and a symbol of creativity and reinvention—we believe in honoring what already exists. Rather than letting beauty fade away, we give it a second song.
Our pieces are not meant to be perfect. They are meant to be lived with, loved, and passed on.
